The stylistic and structural changes that have boosted Collingwood

2018-04-17T15:47+10:00

An urge to be more direct and increased variety up forward has been the catalyst for Collingwood's improvement according to Champion Data's Glenn Luff.

The Pies have won their past two matches, includng an ultra-impressive 48-point win against Adelaide on Friday night, and the more simplistic nature of their ball movement has been one noticeable alteration coach Nathan Buckley has made.

"They were very good the other night against the Crows. But it’s just more the style – they're a strong contested team and always have been," Luff told SEN Afternoons.

"The competition has gone up in terms of kicking – the kick to handball ratio is the highest we have seen since 2007 – so teams are kicking to get it inside 50 more and play that territory game.

"The Pies are the highest handball team so they're flicking it around a bit more. When they do kick it they’ve gone more direct – they’ve gone from 16th to 2nd and they're kicking the ball longer so there is a clear style change in the way they are moving the ball the footy.

"They clearly have the lowest kick to handball ratio this year."

Luff also cited the vastly different forward structure the Pies have gone with due to the unfortunate injuries to their major attacking weapons.

"The personnel change by putting the talent in the forward half has been a huge change," he said.

"Last year the guys who played forward the most were Alex Fasolo, Jamie Elliott, Jarryd Blair and Darcy Moore. We haven’t seen three of them on the ground and the other one was playing in the back half.

"This year the forwards have been Ben Reid, Ben Crocker, Travis Varcoe, Jaidyn Stephenson, Mason Cox and Callum Brown. It’s a totally different look and then they put (Adam) Treloar, Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom forward every so often to get that talent in there.

"I’m going to settle and see what the next month produces."

Collingwood will be looking to make it three wins on the bounce when they take on Essendon in their blockbuster ANZAC Day clash next Tuesday night.

You can listen to the game live on 1116 SEN from 12:00pm with Gerard Whateley, Peter Donegan, Danny Frawley, Nick Dal Santo and Abbey Holmes.
