Blues need Jones at his best says Wright

2018-04-20T08:20+10:00

Carlton forward Matthew Wright has backed under fire defender Liam Jones to bounce back against West Coast, saying the team needs him to play his brand of footy.

Jones has had 21 goals kicked on him by his direct opponent after four games, the most in the AFL.

However, he does rank elite at his position in one percenters (8.8 a game), spoils (7.8 a game) and intercept marks (3.3 a game), and Wright says Jones needs to keep bringing those elements to the park.

“The good thing about Liam is he hasn’t changed from the minute I got through the door when he wasn’t playing AFL footy to then playing VFL footy and then coming up,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“He had a fantastic year last year, this year hasn’t gone to plan with the way he has started.

“He is still the same person and will play his brand of football and we need him to as a team.

“We need to work on our defence and get that sorted, and I think that will help him out.”

The Blues will look to notch their first win of the season against the Eagles this Saturday, and you can listen to the game from 4:30pm on 1116 SEN with Andy Maher, Tristan Foenander and Terry Wallace.
