Former Essendon midfielder Adam Cooney says it is frustrating watching Joe Daniher snap set shots from close range, and believes it sometimes looks like he doesn’t care.
Daniher has kicked just 6.5 this season, and has come under fire for not executing traditional drop punt set shot techniques from short distances with minimal angles.
Cooney is of the notion the spearhead’s carefree attitude can often be viewed as a negative, and doesn’t want him implementing unique goal kicking styles.
“It is frustrating as an Essendon supporter to see him lining up from 25m out, and then face at a 90 degree angle, and kick it around his body,” he told SEN Afternoons.
“Then you watch him in the last quarter drain one from 55 that goes mid post height.
“It looks like he doesn’t care at times. He is a free spirit. He certainly does care, but when he is jumping around, smiling and laughing, people don’t like the look of that.
“I know his personality really well. He thinks about the game a lot. He takes it very seriously.
“If I was a coach, I would say, Joe, I don’t want to see you kicking around the corner because you’re a great set shot.”
Daniher and the Bombers will look to improve to 3-2 on Wednesday against Collingwood, and you can listen to the game live on 1116 SEN from 12pm with Gerard Whateley, Peter Donegan, Nick Dal Santo, Danny Frawley and Abbey Holmes.
