Harford explains how he rediscovered his coaching 'zest'

2018-04-24T16:50+10:00

New Carlton AFLW coach Daniel Harford says his time as an assistant coach at Collingwood last season reinvigorated his desire to become a senior coach.

The former Hawthorn and Carlton midfielder replaced the out-going Damien Keeping in the Blues hot seat, and will look to improve on the club's disappointing last placed finish in 2018.

"I had a year off coaching and I didn’t think I would get back into it certainly in the short term," Harford told SEN's KB and The Doc.

"Then getting involved in the AFLW program with Collingwood was a real eye opener for me and gave me a bit of a zest back for coaching.

"To see the way the girls responded to the coaching and the way they developed and how quickly they developed said to me that you can make an impact in this competition pretty quickly.

"I was blown away by the response from the girls to the coaching so I thought why not - let’s do it and see how we go."

One of Harford's first priorities is to maintain the services of skipper Brianna Davey, who has been linked with a move away from Ikon Park.

Davey, who ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament early last season, is making good progress and is expected to be fit for Round 1 of the 2019 campaign.

"She (Davey) will be right to go for the next AFLW season," he said.

"She is the captain of the Blues and a terrific player and we’re very keen to make sure that's how it stays."
