"They're like a one trick pony the way they're trying to play"

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson has strong concerns about the game plan his old side is using.

The Bombers have lost three of their last four, including a poor second half effort against Melbourne on the weekend that resulted in a 36-point loss.

Watson doesn’t think their style of footy holds up in 2018.

“It’s all fixable. You change the way you’re playing for a start, I think they’re hellbent on this triple switch across half back which just goes nowhere,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“Everyone knows what Essendon is trying to do and it just allows opposition sides then defend and put numbers where you don’t want them.

“I would think there’s more time spent in their back half than any other side in the competition.

“They’re like a one trick pony the way they’re trying to play.”

The three-time premiership player is worried their season is going nowhere fast.

“They’ve failed dismally against the Bulldogs, they got smashed by Collingwood and then yesterday again in that third quarter they were inept,” he said.

Former Melbourne forward Garry Lyon agreed and added this was an issue last year as well.

“Last year they were almost on their own in terms of trying to generate their scoring from their back half and once it got to finals footy, that doesn’t stack up, that’s what I firmly believe,” he said.

The Bombers have another big test this weekend when they take on Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.
