Cornes: "Replaceable" McGovern not worth million dollars

2018-05-05T13:13+10:00

Former Port Adelaide midfielder Kane Cornes doesn’t believe West Coast’s Jeremy McGovern is a player worth what his management is asking for.

McGovern has put contract talks on hold and is reportedly seeking a six-year, million dollar deal, but Cornes said he isn’t sure the defender is worth the investment.

“I’m not a big fan of those long-term contracts, I think they come with too much risk,” Cornes told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“You may have to (lose him) because he’s probably replaceable when you look at the sort of money he’s wanting.

“In terms of the risks what I’m saying is he’s not a player that looks like he prepares as best he possibly could and so I think it would be a risk to give a player a six-year contract that can become complacent.

“Six years is a long time and you’d want to be a 100 per cent sure that their body can cope for six years and they’re going to do everything they can to return that investment.

“There’s no secret that players put it all on the line when they don’t have that contract security, now give him six years and who knows what could happen.”

While Victorian teams are chasing McGovern, Cornes said the biggest offer could come from the crosstown rivals.

“I hear Fremantle is going to make a serious play for him. I think he’s an $800,000 player at say four years. I’d be very reluctant to give him any more,” he said.

“I said give him four years at $800,000, I rate him, but I don’t think six years at a million dollars.”

McGovern and the Eagles will take on Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium this afternoon.
