“That could be the stat of the year”

2018-05-07T12:11+10:00

St Kilda has had its fair share of problems this season, but this stat just might top the list.

Jack Newnes, who has played every match for the Saints this season, is at the core of the number that paints a negative picture about his defensive actions.

“Would it surprise you to hear that a player who plays back in Jack Newnes has had four tackles for the season,” Sam Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

Melbourne champion Garry Lyon said, “that could be the stat of the year,” while former Essendon captain Tim Watson was stunned about the number.

“I’m staggered,” Watson said.

“Given the pressure acts that are expected from players now and the defensive actions of players now, it’s almost impossible to believe that somebody who has played seven games has had four tackles.”

Newnes had two tackles in the Round 1 win over Brisbane, while laying one each in the losses to Adelaide and Hawthorn.

He averaged just over three tackles per game last season.
