The “Godfather” coaching offer Saints must present: Lyon

2018-05-08T07:20+10:00

Melbourne champion Garry Lyon says St Kilda must be brave enough to offer Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson a Godfather-type contract.

Hawks President Jeff Kennett said yesterday Clarkson must earn the right to receive an extension from his current club, which Lyon believes leaves the door open for another team to potentially swoop.

“If Alastair Clarkson was available, and it continues to go where St Kilda is going, they would be absolutely derelict, I think, not to explore a Godfather offer to Alastair Clarkson,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“Hawthorn is putting off Clarko until the end of the year. From now until the end of the year, if St Kilda is a strong, ruthless footy club, that want to extent their premiership tally from one, then they would absolutely be exploring that possibility.

“Two million or two and a half million bucks a year.”

Lyon did clarify he isn’t calling for incumbent Saints coach Alan Richardson to be sacked.

Clarkson is contracted at the Hawks until the end of next year.
