Cats ‘wary’ of Kelly contract status says Edmund

SEN newsman Sam Edmund says there could be some concern surrounding Tim Kelly and Geelong, as the emerging star puts talks of a longer commitment to the club on hold.

Kelly has been a revelation for the Cats in his first season, averaging 22.4 disposals per game.

While pointing out the West Australian couldn’t be happier in Geelong in a football sense, and he is contracted for another year, Edmund has raised a potential issue facing Kelly’s future in the blue and white hoops.

“There is a contract situation at Geelong that the Cats are wary of at the moment,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“It concerns Tim Kelly’s status. The midfield revelation is yet to decide if he will commit to the club.

“Geelong have made it clear they want to sign Kelly to a new deal, no formal offer yet, but they have said how about it.

“He is contracted until the end of 2019, but Geelong has already gone to his management. His management has come back and said, thank you, but we are just going to wait and see at the moment because he has two newborn twins.

“His manager has said he is very happy where he is, couldn’t ask for any more from Geelong. He is settled and playing good footy, but it will all come down to the family and can everybody stay in Geelong.

“Caitlin, his partner, her mum and dad have been over a couple of times but they can’t do that all the time, we will just have to wait and see.

“He has three kids under two and a half.

“You’d have to say those two Perth clubs will never stop coming for him.”

Edmund expects about 80 percent of Kelly’s contract decision will come down to his family.

The Cats have watered down the situation, confident Kelly will remain at the club.

“Brian Cook, I spoke to him last night the Geelong CEO, and he said, look, he has only been year for five minutes but the issue is he is playing such good footy, there is an expectation, and understandably so that we will re-contract him,” Edmund said.

“It’s an issue we need to be wary of but we are not worried at the moment other clubs will come for him.”
