Essendon midfielder McGrath opens up on the team's failings

2018-05-19T12:04+10:00

Second year Essendon midfielder Andrew McGrath has spoken candidly about his team’s struggles on and off the field.

Last year’s Rising Star award winner assures Essendon fans that they know what they need to do to turn things around, but need to execute it better.

“We’ve changed a few things structurally with our game plan and I think the reason we’re falling down is just not sticking to that and not all being on the same page and executing it to the best of our ability,” he told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“We’ve spent the last six weeks talking about what we’re doing wrong, how we can rectify it and stuff like that.

“We all know the answers, but haven’t been executing it on gameday probably since the Fremantle game.

“We’ve failed to do it consistently over the four quarters.

“It’s definitely not through a lack of effort, I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is, we’re training a lot better.

“The morale around the group is actually pretty positive for the state we’re in at the moment.”

The Bombers take on Geelong today without McGrath who’s aiming to return from a calf injury next weekend.

The 19-year-old said the club isn’t particularly concerned with the result today.

“The end result isn’t a huge issue, but if we can see that we’re making strides, that’d be a huge result,” he said.

The Powercor Country Festival is a free event commencing at 1pm on Saturday May 19 in Yarra Park. Includes performances by the Black Sorrows, John Williamson, Michelle Gardiner and Darren Coggan.
