Lyon: Ablett, Dangerfield & Selwood in the same midfield doesn't work

2018-05-21T08:31+10:00

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon wonders whether the star-studded trio of Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett can co-exist in the same midfield.

Geelong was comfortably beaten by the struggling Essendon at the MCG on Saturday afternoon and Lyon didn’t like what he saw from the three when they were on the ball together.

“Their midfield mix was Dangerfield, Selwood and Ablett was playing as the high half forward coming off the back of the square, I don’t know whether you can have those three,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s where Scott Selwood not playing makes a difference, because you’ve got to change that dynamic up, especially when you’ve conceded two or three goals.

“Half way through the second quarter they took Selwood out of the centre square and Dangerfield went to full forward because the mix wasn’t right.

“The symbolism of the three in there together is fantastic, maybe the reality of it is it doesn’t work.

Lyon believes Geelong coach Chris Scott will be liking what he’s gotten from Ablett this season, but would want a more balanced game-style from him.

“I think Chris Scott would want a bit more defensive awareness at least,” he said.

Geelong will have a chance to rebound from their poor loss to the Bombers when they take on Carlton at GHMBA Stadium on Saturday night.
