“They’re miserable at the moment,” says former St Kilda coach

Former St Kilda coach Tim Watson says a number of the Saints players aren’t playing anywhere near to their potential at the moment.

The Saints were condemned to their fourth straight defeat against Collingwood on Saturday, losing by 28 points as their horror season continues.

Without a win since Round 1, Watson thinks something needs to give in order for the club to salvage their season.

“They’re miserable at the moment,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“We know they had a big board meeting last week where the coach needed to explain what was going on but there were no significant changes.

“There are a lot of players now playing at St Kilda who are playing below their talent. Some of their personal aren’t playing as well as they’re capable of playing,

“There was a lack of connection and they don’t have much in the front half.

“Something has to happen, you can’t just allow this to continue on.”

Melbourne great Garry Lyon believes the struggling Saints should take inspiration from Essendon following their backs to the wall upset win over Geelong.

“I would send a text out to all the players saying bring your popcorn and we’ll have some pizzas,” Lyon said.

“Get yourself comfortable and watch Essendon versus Geelong.

“Here is a side that were lower than us last week, they were in a greater crisis than us, and they’ve turned this around on the basis of what? Effort and intensity.”

The two-time Demons leading goal-kicker also suggested that veteran Saint David Armitage is past his best and can't continue to be carried due to their stars being well down on form.

“I think Armitage's footy is well past him,” he said.

“He’s had a really good career but he’s never been super quick and his body is starting to write some cheques he can’t cash.

“It’s a complimentary set up if you’ve got other players that are coming through then you can carry an Armitage because you’ve got Jack Billings Jack Sinclair, Jack Newnes and Seb Ross playing at a rare level.

“But when they’re not those players are going to look more exposed than normal.”

It doesn't get any easier for Alan Richardson's side as they take on reigning premiers Richmond at the MCG on Saturday.
