Terry Wallace says the comments made by Simon Lethlean about a portion of players on St Kilda's list could cause disharmony within the club.
Speaking on SEN’s Time On, Saints head of football Lethlean put the heat on a group of St Kilda players who are in the 30-50 games bracket, saying that an “uplift in leadership and input” was required and that it can’t all be left up to the same individuals.
Hawthorn champion Wallace believes playing the blame game could create “a wedge” between the playing group when unity is needed during this turbulent time for the struggling club.
“I think he was trying to look after Richo (coach Alan Richardson) a little bit,” Wallace told SEN Afternoons.
“All the pressure had been on Richo, the president had come out and said 'we’re a top four side so it was to try and ease a little bit of that burden.'
“But as soon as you start identifying a group: it’s not the boards fault, it’s not the managements fault, it’s not the coaches fault, and it’s not even the senior players fault.
“It’s the players who have played between 30-50 games, and it’s not Jimmy Webster or Luke Dunstan’s fault.
“You’re actually lobbing this big dump on a group of guys, I just think it’s very dangerous.
“Do you need a lift out of those guys? Yeah he’s probably right.
“But for somebody internally to come out externally and say that about one small group within the football club, you may never win those blokes back by going down that pathway.
“You put a wedge between your own club by doing that.
“I can understand you having those conversations privately but I can’t understand a person from management coming out and saying: ‘the problem with our club at the moment is that it’s not them, them and them. Look over here, it’s those blokes who are letting us down.’
“You don’t do that.”
