Mills injury “flattening for everyone” says Sydney footy boss

2018-05-25T10:11+10:00

Sydney’s head of football Tom Harley says the club are reeling following the freak injury to youngster Callum Mills.

Mills will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his foot in an unfortunate incident after yesterday’s training session when he tripped while attempting to catch a gridiron ball.

The 2016 Rising Star winner will go in for surgery on Monday to repair the broken metatarsal, and Harley revealed both Mills and the playing group are feeling “flat” following the unfortunate news.

“It’s extremely disappointing for him and extremely disappointing for us,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“It’s in the fifth metatarsal which is the outside of the foot so it’s a really clean break. We’re not expecting any issues with the surgery, he is booked in at this stage on Monday.

“The medico’s initial prognosis was there won’t be any sort of weight-bearing running until about 12 weeks.

“We’re definitive enough to say he won’t be taking any further part in the season. He’s pretty flat understandably.

“There’s injuring yourself in games which I think people can generally stomach, there’s injuring yourself in training which you can stomach slightly less and then there’s injuring yourself when you’re not involved in any form of training.

“That’s absolutely flattening for everyone.”

John Longmire’s side will have to pick themselves up and refocus ahead of their meeting with Brisbane at the Gabba tomorrow, and you can hear the game live on 1116 SEN from 4:30pm with Jack Heverin, Benny Jones and Brent Staker.
