Who will be the All-Australian ruckman?

2018-05-28T10:57+10:00

Who will finish 2018 as the All-Australian ruckman? Three players appear to be fighting it out for the one or two spots.

Brodie Grundy, Max Gawn and Nic Naitanui have been dominant for their respective teams and SEN lead broadcaster Gerard Whateley believes we’ll see two ruckmen picked in the team.

“If it’s true that both Gawn and Grundy are in the top few players in the competition, they’ll absolutely put both in the team,” he told SEN's Whateley.

“One will be on the field and one will be on the bench.

“They’ve both been epic they are winning games for their teams in the way they’re setting up, they both would go in.”

North Melbourne premiership player David King threw Naitanui in the mix.

“So where would you have Nic Naitanui then?” King asked.

“He’s playing 55 to 60 per cent game time and having more influence on games than almost every other player.

“You can’t compare his numbers to these guys as he’s not playing the minutes, but no one has more influence on his team than Nic.”

King doesn’t envy the All-Australian selectors.

“The toughest job in footy right now is working as an All-Australian selector working out whether you want one ruck, two rucks – you’re definitely going to have two, but you could mount a case that the two you pick aren’t the two best ruckmen,” he said.

“I still think if Max Gawn’s going up against Nic Naitanui, he’s concerned, let’s put it that way.

“We’re going to have a great finals series for talls this year, it’s going to be outstanding.”

We haven’t seen two ruckmen picked in the All-Australian team since Nic Naitanui and Dean Cox in 2012.

What do you think? Who’s leading the race right now?
