Watson opens up on Kickett/Sheedy meeting

2018-05-30T06:50+10:00

Essendon champion Tim Watson has opened up on how Derek Kickett and Kevin Sheedy buried the hatchet after 25 years of tension.

Kickett and Sheedy had never discussed issues stemming from the 1993 premiership, with their disdain towards one another well known in public.

However, the pair finally met earlier this week, with Watson explaining how the meeting was made and how the discussion went down.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“At the 1993 (reunion) night we had a couple of weeks ago, there were different discussions which took place during the night about Derek and that type of thing,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“After that Xavier Campbell rang me and said, we got to get these blokes together. I’m going to call Derek and Kevin, and I’m going to get them together.

“I didn’t play a role, I said, if you can pull that off after 25 years, that would be a great thing.

“He did, he spoke to Derek and Derek said, yes, it’s time. Kevin said, yes, it’s time.

“He organised for them to go to his place.

“They met for the first time in 25 years and Derek was very confrontational because there are a lot of things he had on his chest that he needed to get off.

“He did and he apparently did that in a very forcible way and in a very direct way.

“Kevin apparently was magnificent in the way he accepted that.

“They did for about half an hour, back and forward, and they buried the hatched and moved on.”

Watson also added Campbell wasn’t motivated to organise the meeting by Sheedy’s elevation to legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
