Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon has named the top five Demons players he ever played with and believes Nathan Jones would be in the vicinity of them.
Jones will play his 250th game this weekend and Lyon doesn’t believe there’s too big a gap between him and the top five.
“Robert Flower’s out there on his own. David Neitz, Jim Stynes, Todd Viney, Brett Lovett doesn’t get any mention, David Schwartz – they’d be my five,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“He wouldn’t be too far away Nathan Jones – three time best and fairest winner and a very good player.”
Lyon was full of praise for the Melbourne skipper’s performances when times were bad.
“He has been a fantastic performer for the Melbourne Football Club in times when the club was going poorly, he just kept fronting up and playing good footy,” he said.
“That is the sign of a really good player to perform when they’re no good and now they’re playing well and he’s still playing really good footy.
“He’ll go into the Melbourne Hall of Fame and so I’m hoping he finally gets some finals success.”
Melbourne will take on the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
