Two-time Melbourne best and fairest winner Garry Lyon wants to see more from Tom Boyd than what he’s dished up so far in 2018.
The former number one draft pick has kicked five goals this year playing a combination of up forward and in the ruck and Lyon believes he doesn’t do enough to warrant selection.
“Schache’s young so park him, Tom Boyd was so disappointing on the weekend,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“He’s just got no presence, like he wasn’t getting to contests, he was rucking and playing forward.”
Lyon compared Boyd (a former number one draft pick) to Mason Cox (a fourth round rookie selection) and explained the difference so far this season.
“Mason Cox played a game three weeks ago in the wet, I don’t know if he took a mark, but he had a big influence on the game because he contested, he controlled the drop of the footy and there was a predictability and a consistency about where the ball is going to go,” he said.
“They’re not getting any of that out of Tom and I know he’s had a lot of difficulties and we’re always mindful of that, but I just watched the game on Saturday and I had to say, he’s been enormously disappointing this year.”
Lyon doesn’t believe the Bulldogs’ forward line structure works once teams figure them out.
“They kicked five goals to one against Collingwood in the first quarter and they were three goals to none against Melbourne and they did it on the back of some frenzied ball movement,” he said.
“But then once clubs reset, Melbourne was terrible early, but once they reset and got organized, there’s no real way the Dogs can score.”
The Bulldogs have the bye this weekend before taking on Port Adelaide in Round 13.
