U18 girls footy brawl blown “out of proportion”

2018-06-04T12:16+10:00

Tullamarine Football Club president Peter Labbad says the reporting of a cancelled girls football match on the weekend has been “taken out of proportion.”

The Herald Sun has reported Sunday’s game between Tullamarine and Essendon Doutta Stars was called off in the final quarter due to a “brutal fight.”

However, Labbad has slammed those claims, saying the terminology used is far too strong.

“It’s been taken out of proportion, so I’m pretty disappointed with what has been said,” he told SEN’s Whateley.

“It’s a normal push and shove. It was a couple of girls slapping each other, push and shove.

“It was 20 goals the difference, the umpires did the right thing, seven-eight minute mark of the last quarter, lets just call it off. No one is going to get any result out of this. That’s as far as it went.

“When the umpire called it off, our support staff went and grabbed our team, moved them out of the way, we had a discussion with our girls, and that was it.”

SEN’s Whateley with Gerard Whateley can be heard Monday-Thursday 9-12am, and you can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes here

SEN caller Peter was a trainer for Doutta Stars on the day, and echoed Labbad’s sentiments.

“There was nothing to it,” he said.

“I concur completely with the Tullamarine president. Nothing at all.

“The girls gathered around, a little bit of push and shove, as per normal. I think the problem was that it was right next to the Tullamarine bench, and probably sometimes parents with good intentions thinking they’re doing the right thing by breaking it up.

“Someone had stepped onto the playing field, someone from the public. That’s the reason the umpires must call it off.”
