Melbourne champion Garry Lyon believes football isn’t everything to Jack Watts after the Port Adelaide recruit was dropped for his side's clash with the Western Bulldogs on Thursday night.
“By his own admission, footy is not the be all and end all and therefore he doesn’t play like the desperado that we want him to be,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.
The 27-year-old’s form has been down since crossing over from Melbourne at the end of last year, with his omission coming after playing the first 11 matches this season.
“There’ll be a lot of people going around trying to feel vindicated – Melbourne supporters who’ll be saying ‘see, that’s why we got rid of him’,” Lyon said.
“But it’s not like that.
“This is a side that are pretty deep and he has to go back to the SANFL and get some form.”
But the axing doesn’t come as a surprise to Lyon.
“Jack wouldn’t be at Port Adelaide if this wasn’t a chance to happen,” he said.
“That’s the bottom line.
“He doesn’t play on the edge and that’s the reason he’s not at Melbourne.”
Watts has kicked 13 goals for the Power in 2018.
