Melbourne champion Garry Lyon has labelled the Western Bulldogs’ 57-point loss to Port Adelaide a “disaster.”
Compounding the heavy defeat were hamstring injuries suffered to skipper Easton Wood and star Jackson Macrae. Meanwhile, Tom Boyd and Lukas Webb both sustained finger ailments, Roarke Smith copped a rib knock and Marcus Bontempelli limped off in the second half, but did return later in the affair.
The magnitude of the loss, the injuries and their upcoming fixture created a calamitous night for Luke Beveridge’s men, according to Lyon.
THE WRAP-UP: PORT ADELAIDE V WESTERN BULLDOGS
“It was a disaster for the Western Bulldogs,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“It was just a disastrous night.
“To lose their captain, then their second best player for extended periods of time, given who they play in the upcoming month.
“They have North, the Cats, the Hawks and the Demons. It is a horror run.
“Not a good night.”
However, Lyon did acknowledge the Dogs’ fight after quarter time, while lauding the three-goal effort of youngster Ed Richards.
