Mid-season report cards from Plough

2018-06-14T19:00+10:00

Terry Wallace has shone the spotlight on seven more clubs at the midway point of the 2018 AFL season.

Brisbane, Collingwood, GWS Giants, Essendon, Melbourne and North Melbourne all have the bye in Round 13 while the Gold Coast Suns had their week off recently, providing a great opportunity for the Hall of Fame inductee to analyse how they have performed until this point.

Speaking on SEN's The Match Committee, Wallace went through each of the teams and explained why he delivered the grades that he did.

Plough's mid-season report card

Gold Coast: E+

15th with 3 wins

"That's a fail in anyone's language.

"It's not the worst of worst fails, it's not in the F margins.

"They are marginally up from that because they still have won those three games early on in the season but the drop-off has been dramatic and too far as far as I'm concerned.

"It's been really poor of recent times, their percentage is unacceptable in a professional competition."

Brisbane: D-

17th with 1 win

"They've won less games (than the Suns) but I've actually given them a D-.

"They just got a pass. Why when they've only won one game?

"In nearly every game they've been competitive. They're showmen.

"They put on a real show, they kick reasonable scores, there's no doubt about that.

"I like their direction and where they're heading for the future. I don't think they've been as bad as some."

Collingwood: A-

6th with 8 wins

"Why not an A+?

"Their last month would probably have them as an A+ but looking across the board, they were in a little bit of concern after three or four weeks.

"The first month of footy wasn't as good but they've really got it rolling now.

"They are playing great footy, I like the change up. Their younger players coming up through the forward line, the midfield has struck some really good form.

Essendon: D-

12th with 5 wins

"They got a pass mark, just scraped through.

"They've won more games than the Lions (same mark of D-) but their expectation was higher.

"The upside for them is they've beaten some good sides and they've also turned around what looked like a disastrous start.

"The early part of the season was unacceptable, they were playing some really murky footy."

GWS Giants: E+

9th with 6.5 wins

"Same as the Suns.

"I do mine surrounding expectation. I thought most people had the Giants as certainly a top-eight side, most thought they were a top four side.

"Outside of finals at the moment and no certainty to be able to get there so to me that's got to be failure.

"Are there reasons for it? Yeah, they've had a lot of injuries and things haven't gone their way but until that Adelaide game I didn't like their approach and they way they were going about their football."

Melbourne: B

5th with 8 wins

"A solid B for Melbourne. They're playing good footy.

"Why a B?

"They are belting up on the sides below them, nothing wrong with that because that gets your percentage in good shape.

"I just need to see them beat a couple of the really good sides before I can say they are an A.

"I had reasonable expectation on them at the start of the year. They've certainly lived up to the expectation and that's why it is a B."

North Melbourne: A-

7th with 7 wins

"They've been over my expectations.

"Why isn't it an A+ when everyone thought they were going to be really low and they've done what they've done?

"They're still inside the eight at the moment but no absolute certainty as a lock for finals.

"They've got a very good draw which gives them a great chance to finish off their season.

"They've lost a couple of games across the journey but I'm quite comfortable with an A- from where I thought they'd be at the start of the year."
