The flaw in the last touch out of bounds rule

2018-06-14T12:40+10:00

Melbourne captain Daisy Pearce believes tweaks are needed to the last touch out of bounds rule to make it viable next season.

The rule was introduced for the last AFL women’s season and is being considered as part of the potential rule changes for the men’s competition in order to reduce congestion.

Pearce said it did it's job in some circumstances in AFLW, but needs to be modified.

“We had it in AFLW and I thought it was effective between the arcs, but it became tricky and I don’t think it created what it was intended to inside 50,” she told SEN’s Whateley.

“You’d kick inside 50 into space and it rolls out of bounds in your forward pocket and it becomes a free kick to the opposition.

“Suddenly your back into a long kick down the line.”

Pearce outlined what she would change to make the rule more viable.

“I’d say it’s more effective if it’s only between the arcs otherwise you’re going to limit scoring opportunities because you can’t kick to space as confidently in your front half,” she said.

The last touch out of bounds rule has also been trialled in the SANFL.
