Mills reveals how first conversation with Longmire went after shocking injury

Sydney defender Callum Mills has revealed how his first conversation with coach John Longmire went after his season-ending injury earlier in the season.

Mills firstly explained the strange circumstances that led to the shocking injury.

“I was walking back from a coffee and a few of the boys carry around a football when we go for a coffee, it’s right next door to our training centre,” he told the AFL Nation pregame show.

“One of the boys threw me the ball and I didn’t see a storm water drain in the middle of the footpath and rolled my ankle and heard a pop and the rest is history.”

Mills said he wasn’t ready for the conversation with Longmire after realising how bad the injury was.

“I wasn’t prepared for the conversation honestly, I was mid x-ray and saw the phone ring and saw it was (Longmire) and I answered it,” he said.

“To his credit he was pretty calm and told me to run him through what happened.

“He said ‘right, okay’, and sort of hung up and that was it and luckily I didn’t have to see him for a little bit because it would’ve been stressful.

“To his credit he’s handled it really well.”

Mills also confirmed his season is definitely done.

“The season’s ruled out, I can’t walk for six weeks and I can’t run for 12. It puts too much stress on the body to get back in such a short period of time,” he said.

“It’s shattering to be honest, I still haven’t quite gotten over how I did it.”
