Why Dal felt more nervous than ever watching Saints win over Suns

2018-06-18T16:12+10:00

Former St Kilda star Nick Dal Santo says the emotion and anxiousness he felt watching the final moments of the Saints’ win over Gold Coast on the weekend exceeded any feelings he had during his playing days.

St Kilda secured their first victory since Round 1 thanks to Jade Gresham’s late goal, and Dal Santo has explained how nervous he was watching from ground level.

SEN Afternoons with Andy Maher can be heard Monday-Friday 12-3pm, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“I reckon I was more emotional and more anxious for those last two minutes than I ever was as a player because you can’t do anything about it,” he told SEN Afternoons.

“As a player it’s, what do I do now, what do I do next, what is going to happen, what are the scenarios that could happen. You’re constantly thinking of all these things.

“The last thing you’re thinking is, geez, I’m nervous.”

Dal Santo also provided an insight into how coach Alan Richardson would have been feeling after the triumph.

“From an Alan Richardson point of view, it looked like a man of relief,” he said.

“He embraced his family. I wouldn’t say he was crying, so when I say emotional don’t think that, but I think he was choked-up emotional.

“He was in the song, which I think might be the first time he has ever done that with a St Kilda win, which just shows you what it means.”
