Mid-season reports from Plough

2018-06-21T19:00+10:00

Terry Wallace has shone the spotlight on seven more clubs at the midway point of the 2018 AFL season.

Adelaide, Fremantle, Geelong, Richmond, St Kilda and Sydney all have the bye in Round 14 while Port Adelaide had their week off recently, providing a great opportunity for the Hall of Fame inductee to analyse how they have performed until this point.

Speaking on SEN's The Match Committee, Wallace went through each of the teams and explained why he delivered the grades that he did.

Plough's mid-season report card

Adelaide: E

11th with 6 wins

“They get an E.

“Massive injuries, I understand.

“Adelaide Crows supporters will say ‘give us a break’ but you can’t have a pass mark for a side that played off in the Grand Final that looks likely not to be playing finals this year.

“Are there reasons for it? Yes.

“Is it going to be one of their seasons that you draw a line through and go again? Probably.

“The one shining light for me has been the form of Bryce Gibbs coming over.

“You pay a premium, unfortunately the premium was to get him to be the cream on the cake but he’s been the whole cake himself.”

Fremantle: C-

12th with 6 wins

“The past fortnight has changed my mark for them.

“They would have been struggling for a pass mark but I’ve given them a C-.

“I think they’re marginally in front of where they expected to be.

“They’ve got a pretty good run at home and it was pleasing to see them get a good solid victory on the road.

“Their stars are playing good football and leading from the front but the thing that I’ve really liked is that they’ve got some genuine talent out of those younger players.

“The future of some of those youngsters looks really bright.”

Geelong: B-

5th with 8 wins

“I think the expectations with Gary Ablett coming back was that they could be a contender.

“I don’t think that they’ve shown that they are that yet.

“They’re certainly not out of the picture of being there but for me the side has been tipped upside down, some of that’s been good.

“The backline has stood up and done some wonderful things. They haven’t always got out of the middle of the ground what they’ve expected.

“They are just under where I thought they would be.”

Port Adelaide: B

7th with 8 wins

“Port Adelaide are getting a nice pass mark, they’re getting a B for their efforts so far.

“I thought they’d play finals this year and they’re in and amongst that.

“Considering they’ve had their bye, they’ve got a little bit of scope.

“Playing some reasonable football, about where I expected them to be, but when the whips get cracking I want to see how they handle (big) games, particularly away from home.”

Richmond: A

1st with 10 wins

“Lost their games on the road, that’s why it is not an A+.

“But you are talking about a premiership side that’s been able to stack it up and show that they’re going to be right back in the hunt again.

“So that’s an A for the Richmond Footy Club, doing pretty good work.”

St Kilda: F

16th with 2.5 wins

“It’s an F, that’s our first F.

“It’s been a disastrous season, really disappointing.

“Pleasing for them to get a result last week against the run of play but they haven’t met anywhere near any of our expectations.

“They’ve hardly had a player on their list who’s played better football this year than what they’ve played in the last couple of years.

“We still speak about them really lacking that star factor amongst them and I’ve got to say, at times they’ve looked like not knowing what they’re doing.

“Their structure has been a bit wobbly.”

Sydney: B+

3rd with 10 wins

“They’re a B+.

“On the ladder they’re probably an A for where they sit so there’s bonuses in that.

“But I don’t think they’ve played their best footy so far.

“Their defensive work has been really good, that’s been outstanding.

“The kids have added so much to the line-up (Oliver Florent, Ben Ronke and Will Hayward).

“They’ve got the runs on the board and they can get their A in the back-half of the year.”
