The hidden talent of Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson

2018-06-21T17:25+10:00

Alastair Clarkson is one of the most successful coaches in AFL history and is widely recognised as the best in the game.

His coaching methods have led to him winning four premierships with the Hawks, including a famous ‘Three-peat’ in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

However it is an obscure activity pre and post-match that can be attributed to keeping morale levels high within the Hawthorn camp.

According to Hawks midfielder Liam Shiels, Clarkson is known for ‘whipping out’ the guitar on regular occasion and having a sing along with the boys.

“He’s whipped the guitar out probably 10 times over the last few years so he’s really getting into it,” said Shiels on SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“He gets it out a fair bit. Sometimes pre-match, mostly after matches if we have a good win he’ll whip the guitar out in the rooms and we’ll have a bit of a sing-along.

“Most of the boys love it," he added.

“I know there’s a couple of boys that cringe when they see the guitar on the team bus, they want to play a bit of a prank and take a few strings off, but most of the boys enjoy it.”

When asked if Clarkson could make a career out of performing, Shiels reckons he should stick to coaching.

“Nah probably not,” said Shiels.

“I think he makes a better coach than he does performer.”
