Take the money: Quartermain on De Goey

2018-06-25T10:16+10:00

Stephen Quartermain has stated he believes Collingwood midfielder Jordan De Goey should do what’s best for himself and take the biggest offer he can get in free agency.

De Goey is having a break out season with the Pies, putting in numerous match-winning performances.

He is out of contract this coming offseason and a number of potential suitors will be willing to pay big dollars for his signature.

On SEN’s Whateley, Quartermain believes in a buyers’ market which free agency currently is, De Goey could command a million dollars a year for his next contract, and that the risk of potential injury is too high to turn down an offer that big.

“He’s got some decision to make Jordan De Goey,” Quartermain said.

“Does he owe Collingwood, yes he does.

“This man commands close to a million. He could easily command in the market 900 thousand without even trying too hard.

“You take the money, you could hurt yourself quickly and your career could be over,” he added.

“You have a responsibility to look after yourself.

“If someone comes up with a godfather offer, four and a half million over five years, it’s hard to knock back when you’re a professional footballer when it can turn so sour so quickly.”
