World Cup Wrap: Germany crash out in major upset

2018-06-28T08:00+10:00

A big night in Russia has helped shape the Round of 16, with Germany making their earliest World Cup exit since 1938.

Here’s a wrap up of all the overnight World Cup action!

Group F

Korea Republic: 2 (Y G Kim 90’+3’, H M Son 90’+6’)

Germany: 0

In a massive upset, Korea Republic has downed Germany, knocking the reigning champions out of the 2018 World Cup.

After 90 minutes of action there was no score on the board and the game looked like it would conclude without a victor.

But Korea Republic pulled off an incredible upset, scoring two goals in the space of three minutes to end the number one ranked countries time in the tournament.

Group F

Mexico: 0

Sweden: 3 (Augustinsson 50’, Granqvist 62’ PEN, E. Alvarez 74’ OG)

Sweden were the dominant side for the entire match, doing all the attacking from the outset.

It took the Europeans five minutes in the second half to register their first score, before Andreas Granqvist converted a penalty just 12 minutes later to extend the lead.

To cap off a commanding victory and send Sweden into the Round of 16 in style, Mexico defender Edson Alvarez conceded an own goal, making it a 3-0 result.

Despite a disappointing performance, Mexico benefited from Germany’s defeat, finishing second in Group F to advance to the next round.

Group E

Serbia: 0

Brazil: 2 (Paulinho 36’, T. Silva 68’)

Brazil converted goals in both halves of the match to knock Serbia out of the World Cup.

Serbia were gallant, but unable to convert throughout the game, as Brazil’s Paulinho was the first to find the back of the net.

Thiago Silva then headed one home to book Brazil a date with Mexico next week.

Group E

Switzerland: 2 (Dzemali 31’, Drmic 88’)

Costa Rica: 2 (K. Watson 56’, Sommer 90’+3’ OG)

Heading into this Group E match, Switzerland need to muster at least one point to advance to the Round of 16, while Costa Rica were left to play for pride.

After Switzerland took an early lead, Kendall Watson scored Costa Rica’s first goal of the tournament to equalise in the 56th minute.

Switzerland regained the lead in the latter stages, until Bryan Ruiz’s penalty attempted struck the cross bar and rebounded off keeper Yann Sommer’s head to end the game in a draw.

The 2-2 result was enough for Switzerland to advance and they will face Sweden in the next stage.
