Bob Murphy's advice for Carlton skipper

2018-06-28T12:41+10:00

Former Western Bulldogs skipper Bob Murphy has encouraged Marc Murphy to stay at Carlton and help re-shape the club’s future.

Marc Murphy’s contract has been heavily discussed, with rumours circulating that he may look to finish his career elsewhere in a bid to win a premiership.

But Bob Murphy said the captain of the Blues has the opportunity to significantly help the club’s development and set a strong tone internally.

“I just think this as a leader, this is his moment to create a legacy at Carlton of sacrifice and leadership,” Bob Murphy told SEN’s Whateley.

“From afar … it seems he has good relationships there.

“He may not be a part of the next premiership but I think there’s a dignity in him staying and shaping the next group of finals players, hopefully a premiership team there.”

The 30-year-old is currently on the sidelines with a foot injury but still has the ability to teach the young Carlton players.

“Whether he’s got the ‘c’ next to his name or not, he’s the elder of that football club,” Bob Murphy said.

“I’d love to see him just re-shape his role, that mentoring role of looking after that young group.

“They have got some talent in that side and we have seen things bounce quicker.”

Bob Murphy is uncomfortable with the discussions surrounding the Blue’s skipper, believing all captains should be fully committed to their club.

“I just feel like at the moment with the captain, he’s not on the field and it’s almost like this open conversation of ‘I’m going to way up my options’,” he said.

“That doesn’t sit right with me ethically or morally.”

Marc Murphy was the number one pick in the 2005 National Draft and has played 240 games for Carlton.
