Shaun McKernan has 'off the charts' upside says Frawley

2018-07-02T08:10+10:00

Former Richmond coach Danny Frawley believes Essendon forward Shaun McKernan has upside that is “off the charts” but is still plagued by inconsistency in his play.

McKernan starred in Essendon’s 17-point win over North Melbourne over the weekend, racking up 18 disposals, seven marks and four goals in a match winning performance.

Frawley believes McKernan has all the talent to be a quality player, but needs to find a way to play his best footy every week.

“He was almost unbeatable a few times with the marks, the goals he was kicking,” said Frawley on SEN Breakfast.

“But it's just the inconsistency that he brings.

“The upside of what we saw yesterday is off the charts, it really is,” he added.

“But where is it week in week out.”

Former Essendon midfield Adam Cooney is well aware of the talent McKernan possesses, having trained with him during his time at Essendon.

He echoed the sentiments of Frawley, expressing that McKernan is a ‘confidence’ player.

“It’s just the inconsistency that’s plagued his game,” said Cooney.

“When he’s on, he’s got x-factor, he can take a good grab.

“When it’s not working for him in a brief period, the confidence can erode quickly.

“He’s gotta work out a way when it’s not working for him to keep that effort up.”
