Brisbane veteran Hodge still weighing up his future

2018-07-03T19:44+10:00

Brisbane defender Luke Hodge says he is no closer to making a decision on whether he will play on in 2019.

Hodge came out of retirement to join the Lions on a two-year deal and his experience and presence in a young Brisbane side has been a big success so far this season.

Having played 13 of the 14 games so far in 2018, the 34-year-old will wait until the end of the season to see whether his body can go around for an 18th season.

“It was a two-year playing deal,” Hodge told SEN’s Time On.

“But it was always going to be down to how the body’s feeling and how the list was looking at the end of the year.

“At this stage it’s still the same. When you’re 34 and you’ve got nine games to go, it’s still a long way to go before we make that decision.

“The initial one was a two-year deal but that was always flexible depending on how the body and the club is going.”

Hodge opened up on his role within the club and the trepidation he felt before making the shock move to last season's wooden spooners during last year's trade period.

“To be honest I was pretty nervous,” he said.

“If you get an injury everyone is going to say: ‘it was a disaster’ if you can’t get on the paddock.

"Fages (Chris Fagan) was really clear at the start. He said the main thing for my role, whether I’m going to play five, 15 or 20 games is trying to help the younger group guys develop faster by giving them feedback on the field.

“But to also be there for a Dayne Beams or a Dayne Zorko or a Harris Andrews as far as leadership goes for them to bounce things off.

“I’m sort of just sitting in the background trying to help where I can.

“With ‘Beama’ passing on the captaincy, Zorko has been outstanding with his leadership on and off the field."
