Carlton CEO hints at player re-signing announcements next week

2018-07-13T19:38+10:00

Carlton CEO Cain Liddle has hinted the Blues will make a few announcements in the coming weeks regarding player re-signings.

While discussing why the club is not asking the AFL for a priority pick, Liddle mentioned the club will make some announcements next week.

Vice-captain Patrick Cripps has been linked to a contract extension, which likely would headline those re-signings.

The likes of Kade Simpson, Matthew Wright, Sam Rowe, Jarrod Pickett, Dale Thomas and Cameron Polson remain out of contract at the end of the year.

“Our view on the priority pick is we want to take responsibility for where we’re at and accept that we got ourselves into this position,” Liddle told the AFL Nation pregame show.

“We’re more keen on things we can control, like the re-signing of players, which we’ve done a great job of this year and I’m really confident that next week we’ll have a few more announcement to make.

“We’re just not sure waving a white flag and asking for a priority pick is really in line with our confidence. We’ve made a decision to go down this path and we think when it comes to the 18 to 21 year old’s, we’re as good as anyone in that age group.”

Liddle said he wasn’t entirely sure, but believes the Carlton board will have the final say if the Blues do decide to trade their first round draft selection – likely pick one.

“I do think when it comes to the trading of a first round pick, I do think our board reserves the right to have final say on that – which is fair enough, it’s a massive decision,” he said.

It’s been speculated a club like Adelaide could attempt to trade with Carlton for pick one and Liddle said Stephen Silvagni and his team haven’t ruled out trading the pick.

“That decision ultimately sits with Stephen Silvagni and his list management and recruiting team and they’ll make the very best decision for the Carlton Football Club,” he said.

“They’ll ultimately come with a recommendation, but they’re paid to do a job and we’ve got great confidence that they’ll do that job.

“There’s a whole range of options that haven’t existed before, like future picks, that our team are currently looking at.”
