Hawks dealt major injury blow

2018-07-17T08:35+10:00

UPDATE

Hawthorn have confirmed James Sicily's injury in the below statement.

"Hawthorn defender James Sicily is likely to be sidelined for an extended period after scans revealed he suffered a broken scaphoid in Saturday’s loss to the Brisbane Lions.

"Sicily will undergo surgery today and is expected to miss at least six weeks.

"GM-Football Graham Wright said it was a disappointing outcome for Sicily and the club, but his absence opens the door for someone else to take their opportunity.

“It’s obviously really unfortunate for James and the club,” Wright said.

“James has been in great form of late, and he’ll be really difficult to replace.

“But, this presents an opportunity to the guys who have been in good touch at Box Hill.

“Someone will step up to fill the void, and we’ll continue on in our pursuit of finals footy.”

"The injury is an ill-timed setback for the rebounding defender, who has enjoyed a breakout season in 2018.

"The 23-year-old has averaged 24 disposals, 7.5 marks and 4.7 rebound 50s across his 14 appearances this year."

EARLIER

Hawthorn’s James Sicily is having scans on his wrist this morning, with fears he has broken his wrist, according to SEN Time On host Sam McClure.

“The Hawks have endured a pretty torrid time of late with injuries,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“We know Cyril Rioli has retired, Ben McEvoy with his cheekbone didn’t play on the weekend, they’re missing Shaun Burgoyne with a hamstring, they’re missing Grant Birchall who has been out all year.

“They might be missing another one of their stars if scan results aren’t good this morning.

“James Sicily is going in for scans, fears he has broken his wrist on the weekend.

“They’re the fears being held by the club at the moment. He has still got to have the scans in about an hour and they will confirm it. Sore wrist and fears there’s a break in there.”

Sicily is averaging 23.9 disposals, 516 metres gained and 9.1 intercept possessions this season.

“When you said Hawthorn, the first player I thought of, given Cyril has retired, if Sicily is the one, then they’re walked under a ladder,” Melbourne great Garry Lyon said.
