Longmire reveals coaching plans for veteran Swan McVeigh

2018-07-16T19:50+10:00

Sydney coach John Longmire has revealed that the Swans have contracted veteran Jarrad McVeigh to remain at the club as a coach once he decides to retire.

McVeigh has enjoyed another ultra-consistent season which has the defender being linked with a move to the Gold Coast in a player/coaching role, similar to that of Luke Hodge’s at Brisbane, once his Swans contract expires at season's end.

Longmire says he will sit down with the 33-year-old to discuss his playing future at the end of the year.

“Last year I probably didn’t expect him to play on this year and then things changed because he played quite well and we came to an agreement at the end of the year,” he told SEN’s Time On.

“I had a chat to him last week and we’ll sit down closer to the end of the year or at the end of the year and have a chat about next year if we need to.

“That’s where it sits, I have a great relationship with Macca. He’s an ex-captain and has a great football brain who’s had a really good season.

“Those discussions will happen at the appropriate time.

“We’ve got him contracted beyond his playing career to coach at the Sydney Swans. We’re really looking forward to that period whenever that may come.

“He’s been a fantastic addition to this footy club on and off the field and we’re looking forward to that for many years to come because we really rate Jarrad extremely highly.”

The 2012 premiership player is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury and will miss the next month of football.
