AFL Hall of Fame inductee Terry Wallace says Hawthorn face a couple of match committee dilemmas as to how they are going to replace the injured James Sicily.
SEN Time on Host Sam McClure broke the story this morning that Sicily was having scans on a broken wrist, with the Hawks later confirming the defender is set for surgery and could miss up to six weeks.
With the Hawks still in contention for a finals berth, Wallace believes Alastair Clarkson faces a selection predicament as to whether they move forward Jack Gunston back into defence or they look to bring in personnel from VFL level to fill the void.
“They’ve still got players who can play that role, clearly they can’t play it like James Sicily,” he told SEN Afternoons.
“It’s a big loss from that point of view. Does it hurt them? Where does Gunston play? Because we’ve seen him at both ends of the ground.
“Does he need to play back to make sure it secures up things? Does he stay forward? I think that will be discussions that they will be having at match committee.
“The players that I sort of see that can fill the role from a VFL point of view, I would have thought David Mirra, Kaiden Brand and Conor Glass are the three that would be battling for that position.
“I certainly think that one of those three will come into calculations and then you’ve got a decision as to what happens with Gunston.”
Sicily has emerged as one of the best defenders in the competition in 2018 and has been tipped to win All-Australian selection for the first time.
