Steven May emotional after Suns' stunning win

2018-07-21T17:27+10:00

Gold Coast’s four-goal victory over Sydney clearly means a lot to co-captain Steven May who was emotional in his post-match interview.

The Suns had never beaten the Swans coming into today and May played in seven of those eight losses.

“I’m speechless,” May told Fox Footy.

“We’ve never beaten the Swannies, let alone thinking it was possible. Stuart (Dew) says anything is possible, but coming to the ground, we knew this was a formidable place to play and I just can’t believe it to be honest.

“The way we’ve been going this year, it’s been very challenging, but a win against the Swans, who I’ve never beaten before, it’s unreal.”

The Swans kicked six goals to one in the first quarter and May said coach Stuart Dew settled them down heading into a second quarter where they would keep Sydney goalless and kick six of their own.

“What he said was it’s six shots to 10 and that was reality, they were a lot more clinical, but we just kicked behinds,” May said.

“I was thinking oh no, not again, we know how good the Swans are when they get their tails up, for the boys to respond, I told the boys, I’m so proud of you no matter what happens.”

May, who has been linked to a move out of the Suns, said this win means a lot to him because it gives hope to the younger players at the club.

“I really want to win. Not for me, for these young boys. We’re putting in so much work during the week and it’s hard for them to believe when there’s no results and I know this is going to be huge. This is much deserved,” the co-captain said.

“Little Charlie Ballard and that came up to me and asked me when are we getting the Gatorade shower and I said it’s not up to me! It’s up to you blokes and they’ll get one tonight!”

May was close to best on ground in the win taking 14 marks, gathering 23 disposals and spoiling several key contests.
