The Wrap Up: Hawks belt rock bottom Carlton

2018-07-22T15:50+10:00

The Hawks did what they had to do at Etihad Stadium, breezing past a hapless Carlton outfit at Etihad Stadium.

The Blues were kept scoreless in the first quarter and restricted to eight points at the half in what was a belting in every aspect.

Carlton kicked a few junk-time goals to lessen the pain, but were never in the game.

Here's everything you need to know!

The Talking Point: How things have changed since March

On March 10th, Carlton defeated Hawthorn in the third game of the JLT Series. The win saw the Blues go through the preseason competition undefeated and there was a general optimism about what they could do this season.

They kicked 16 goals, broke the 100-point barrier and showed they could hang with a good team.

One win and 17 losses later, the Hawks smash the Blues by 72 points.

Things have deteriorated fast for Carlton who are staring down another wooden spoon.

What it means for the ladder

The percentage booster helps the Hawks, bumping them above Geelong and leaving them in seventh spot on the ladder.

This means they'll finish the round in the eight regardless of whether GWS beat Port Adelaide.

The Hawks were always expected to win this one, but they'll still need to beat at least three of Fremantle (Perth), Essendon (MCG), Geelong (MCG), St Kilda (Etihad) and Sydney (SCG) to play finals.

They could be without Daniel Howe (striking) and Ricky Henderson (rough conduct) as both will likely face the MRO for hits on Patrick Cripps and Levi Casboult respectively.

What’s next?

Hawthorn will travel west to take on Fremantle at Optus Stadium in what will be a danger game for the side. They've won four of their last five against the Dockers and their last two in Perth however.

Carlton meanwhile will take on Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium. The Suns are coming off a massive win, but the Blues will need to put in a respectable effort against the team currently sitting 17th on the ladder.
