Perth Glory v Chelsea: Everything you need to know ahead of the clash

2018-07-23T15:48+10:00

Football royalty hits Western Australia tonight when FA Cup holders Chelsea take on A-League side Perth Glory at Optus Stadium.

New Blues boss Maurizio Sarri will take charge of his first game for the west London club, replacing fellow Italian Antonio Conte who departed Stamford Bridge in acrimonious circumstances recently.

Sarri managed Italian giants Napoli for three seasons, leading the club to a second-placed finish in Serie A behind perennial champions Juventus last season, while playing some of the most eye-catching football in Europe.

With the future of star Eden Hazard in doubt as he continues to be linked with a move to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, the clubs plans and ambitions for this season could all hinge on the Belgian's potential departure from Stamford Bridge.

It would spell disaster for both the Londoners and Sarri if Hazard was to leave as they look to improve on their dismal finish of fifth last campaign having claimed the title the season prior.

Reports suggest that a number of Chelsea fringe players will be given an early opportunity to impress their new boss against the Glory with Danny Drinkwater, Ross Barkley, Lucas Piazon and Tammy Abraham along with Spanish internationals Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Alvaro Morata all likely to start.

Perth Glory will also usher in a new era with former Western Sydney Wanderers boss Tony Popovic taking charge for the first time, replacing Kenny Lowe.

The Glory have been active during the off-season acquiring a host of new signings as they look to mount an overdue title challenge.

Defenders Matt Spiranovic, Ivan Franjic, Jason Davidson, Tomislav Mrcela, goalkeeper Tando Velaphi, import midfielders Fabio Ferreira and Juande, and striker Brendon Santalab have all been added, while the future of marquee man Diego Castro remains unclear.

With these notable additions, Popovic will be striving for a big improvement on their eighth-placed finish last season.

It will be the first ever round-ball match to be played at the new Optus Stadium.
