Dual premiership player David King says Carlton’s win over Gold Coast highlighted the slew of young talent the Blues possess.

Brendon Bolton’s men snapped a nine-game losing streak with the 35-point victory against the Suns, and King says the success, particular in the third quarter, is a credit to what the Blues are building.

“No one really saw that coming,” King told SEN’s Whateley.

“You couldn’t watch Carlton and say there is a seven goal quarter around the corner.

“We got to get a minimum of four stars before you can build, before you can really start to fill around the edges, purpose pick some players.

“We know about Patrick Cripps, we know about Charlie Curnow, but Paddy Dow, he made some statement on the weekend.

“That goal was just awesome. Most of his possessions were contested.”

Along with Dow, King also shone the spotlight on a host of Carlton youngsters who flashed their potential on the weekend.

“I think this is just the tip of the iceberg for some of these guys,” King added.

“I’ve been critical of the method of the plan. I’m still holding on the green shoots from the coaching side of things.

“Sam Petrevski-Seton, this kid had a breakout game, he hasn’t even done a preseason yet.

“Jacob Weitering showed some signs, Harry McKay, I know he is a big lumbering lad, and he is always sort of around the area and not always involving himself, but he showed he is going to be a player.

“Ciaran Byrne, much talked about and Jack Silvagni, he is a bit of the whipping boy, but he did some things on the weekend where you say, we are going forward with this guy.

“It just builds now. What was two of three players three weeks ago, to seven, eight or nine, where you can go to a game and say, they are now starting to realise what winning looks like.”

Captain Marc Murphy was also a strong contributor in the win, something King commented on.

“When your leaders play like they do and Brendon Bolton touched on it in the postgame, he said the leaders lead and they did,” he said.

“Marc Murphy, that’s the best game he has played for some time, 36 touches.

“It isn’t about the volume, it’s about his quality. He had eight clearances. I’ve watched Marc over the last few weeks, almost not getting inside the actual traffic.

“Being just a metre off looking for that first receive type. To see him step inside and win some clearances was absolutely fantastic.”
