Report: Luckless Docker Bennell suffers fresh injury setback

2018-07-31T08:25+10:00

Luckless Fremantle midfielder Harley Bennell could miss the rest of the season after reportedly re-injuring his calf.

According to Sportsday WA, Bennell suffered another soft tissue ailment playing for WAFL side Peel Thunder on the weekend, after taking big strides in his quest towards getting back to full fitness.

The former Gold Coast Sun was tipped to return for this weekend’s Western Derby against rivals West Coast, but according to Sportsday WA host Paul Hasleby, the 25-year-old could now sit out the remainder of the year given his lengthy injury history.

IT'S TIME FOR BENNELL TO PLAY SAYS GOSSAGE

“I do not believe he will play in the Western Derby,” Hasleby said.

“There are fresh concerns that he may have hurt his calf again. He struggled to finish the game with Peel Thunder on the weekend, it’s devastating because he was very good.

“He’s had two games back now where he hasn’t been back on reduced minutes, he’s been able to go out there and play.

“He would have come into the team if he was fit, ready and raring to go, but there are fresh concerns that he has hurt his calf again and he may miss the rest of the season given his history with that.

“It’s devastating news for Harley Bennell and the Fremantle Dockers.”

Bennell has played just two games for the Dockers since moving from the Suns at the end of the 2015 season.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon recently confirmed that the out-of-contract Bennell will be given a new extension, regardless of the amount of football he plays between now and the end of the season.
