Can Hawthorn turn Hannebery’s career around?

2018-08-01T07:17+10:00

Hawthorn could be the team who revives Dan Hannebery’s career, according to Garry Lyon.

Hannebery has been a shell of himself this season, as the 27-year-old fights the impact of osteitis pubis and a trio of soft-tissue strains.

The three-time All-Australian is averaging just 18.5 disposals this season, his lowest rate since his debut year, and Lyon has pondered the question if the environment at the Hawks could help turn Hannebery’s career around.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“While the talk is going around about St Kilda, I thought of Hawthorn straight away,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“They would go, give him to us. He on one wing and Isaac Smith on another, stand aside.

“We will back our fitness man Andrew Russell in to get him right, then look out.”

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson drew a parallel to Shaun Burgoyne as an example of how Alastair Clarkson’s team has been able to get the best out of players who are perceived to be washed-up.

“Shaun Burgoyne’s name comes to mind,” Watson said.

“Apparently he was cooked when he left Port Adelaide because of his knee. He has played about another eight years at Hawthorn.”
