The numbers behind Richmond’s MCG winning record

2018-08-01T17:00+10:00

On Saturday, Richmond broke the record for the most consecutive matches won at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

A hard-fought contest against traditional rivals Collingwood in Round 19 ended with a 28-point win to make it 18-straight at the MCG.

Since the last time the Tigers lost at the MCG – to Sydney on June 17, 2017 – they have strung together an unprecedented amount of victories on the hallowed turf to bypass the previous record set by Melbourne in 1955 and 1956.

Included in that winning streak, of course, was the small matter of breaking a 37-year premiership drought by toppling Adelaide at headquarters on that one day in September last year.

To give a little more insight into this remarkable feat, we’ve broken down the numbers to further highlight what the Tigers have achieved on top of the MCG turf over the past 12 or so months.

Consecutive wins: 18

Total for score: 1833
Average per game: 101.83
Scores of more than 100: 13
Scores of 80-100: 4
Average winning margin: 41.11

Total against score: 1093
Average per game: 60.72
Scores conceded of more than 100: 0
Scores conceded of more than 90: 1
Scores conceded of 50-70: 7
Scores conceded of less than 50: 5

First quarter performance: 415 points for v 271 points against (+144 differential)
Second quarter performance: 394 v 222 (+172)
Third quarter performance: 421 v 306 (+115)
Fourth quarter performance: 603 v 294 (+309)

Dispelling a myth that Richmond are afforded more games at the ‘G than their contemporaries, we’ve also put things into perspective.

Fellow MCG tenants Collingwood have played 18 matches at the ground since Richmond’s 18-match winning streak at the venue commenced.

Co-tenants Melbourne have played there 14 times (plus three home games in Darwin) and Hawthorn have had 11 matches at the home of Victorian footy (plus six home games in Tasmania).

Carlton have played there 12 times along with five games at their other home ground, Etihad Stadium.

Many have said it’s been easy for the Tigers at the MCG because they play ‘away’ games at the venue, but regardless of that opinion, they’ve been able to accomplish what no other side has in 62 years.

The Tigers will be looking to extend their MCG record to 19 wins when they face a Geelong side intent on exacting revenge this Friday night.
