Lynch could not be captain says Suns CEO

2018-08-02T18:34+10:00

Gold Coast CEO Mark Evans has declared you can’t be the captain of a club and want to leave, in the wake of the Suns stripping Tom Lynch of the captaincy.

Lynch informed the Gold Coast today of his intention to depart the club, with the Suns firing back by taking the captaincy honour away from the 25-year-old.

According to SEN Time On host Sam McClure, Lynch wanted to remain captain, something Evans responded to.

“I think he would have had that intention (to stay captain) but I’m not sure what that means,” Evans told The Match Committee.

“You might say it’s ceremonial as to whether he is or isn’t, but I think it is a bit of a statement that you can’t be the leader of the place if your intention is known that you are going somewhere else.”

Evans also said the Suns would support Lynch during his rehab from knee surgery, but acknowledged the unique circumstances of the situation.

“He has some rehab to do so we will support that as we should,” Evans said.

“It is awkward isn’t it? Things aren’t the same today as they were yesterday.

“It is probably appropriate to say it shouldn’t really be in and around the normal part of the football program.

“Certainly the leadership group had the same views as Dewy (Stuart Dew), Jon Haines, Craig Cameron, myself and the board, and that was it would be difficult to continue to be captain over the next month, for whatever that means given he is injured.

“That decision was made.”
