Slater wants to remain involved with the Storm post retirement

2018-08-09T11:00+10:00

Retiring Melbourne Storm legend still isn’t quite sure what his 2019 looks like as he gets set to hang up the boots after over 300 NRL appearances.

Slater will be retiring at the end of the 2018 season, but wants to remain involved in the sport, potentially with the Storm.

“I’d love to stay involved with the Melbourne Storm, I do enjoy talking about rugby league and bringing young kids through so yet to paint the picture of what 2019 looks like yet, but hopefully it involves that,” Slater told SEN Breakfast.

“I’m still putting all those pieces together I’d like to stay involved with the game, I’ve been involved in the game my whole life. That and horses are pretty much all I know.

“I’m very passionate about my horses and have been in the racing industry for a long time now so I’ll probably focus on that part of my business as well.”

Slater said his body is still in pretty good shape and the retirement had nothing to do with physical limitations.

“It’s probably a bit of a weight off my shoulders, I’d been sitting on it for quite a few months and had probably made up my mind I just wanted to make sure I was making the right decision,” he said.

“My body’s in pretty good shape, I’m still willing to compete, it’s certainly getting harder to recover after games, but that just happens with age.

“I’m 36 next year and I just felt it was time after what I’ve been through with a couple of serious injuries. I nearly had to retire a couple of years ago with a shoulder injury.

“To be able to have the opportunity to play good footy while I’m still fit and healthy and still willing to go out and put my body on the line, to me that’s a great opportunity to finish up.”
