Hawks youngster Worpel produced the toughest moment of the season: King

2018-08-13T12:00+10:00

David King has praised Hawthorn youngster James Worpel after his fearless attack on the ball in a key contest during the third quarter of the Hawks' 11-point win over Geelong.

With Cats skipper Joel Selwood coming from the other direction, Worpel attacked the contest with ferocity before collecting the ball and setting up a goal for teammate Jack Gunston at a pivotal juncture of the contest.

The North Melbourne great says it was the toughest act he has seen all season.

“There was one moment on the weekend that’s the toughest act I’ve seen in football this year,” King told SEN’s Whateley.

“A seven-game player, James Worpel, knew the decorated and Most Courageous winner about six-times, Joel Selwood, was coming the other way.

“It wasn’t even a 50/50 ball, it was a 40/60 ball and he decided it was going to be his.

“He just charged at the ball, took it clean which Geelong couldn’t do, one touch, spun, took a blow, spun out, gave the handball off to Jack Gunston who put it on the scoreboard to the Hawks, but it was bigger than that.

“It was a massive moment and the whole team got to him as he jogged from the ground and I just thought: what an action, what a moment.

“I think it’s the toughest thing I’ve seen in football all year.”
