United has “shortlist” of players ready to fill third import spot

Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman says the club has a “shortlist” of players ready to fill their third import spot.

United filled two of their import spots yesterday when they re-signed championship duo Casper Ware and Josh Boone, with one more roster slot available for another international talent.

According to Vickerman, the club has narrowed their focus to a select set of players, while revealing Melbourne almost had the position filled last week.

UNITED HAD “CONCERN” AND “DOUBT” OVER BOONE AND WARE RE-SIGNINGS

“We certainly have gone down the track and have got a good shortlist of players for the third import role,” he told SEN’s The Sporting Capital.

“I was hoping that we were going to be able to secure something late last week.

“Some timeframes have changed a little bit and we think it may take another two weeks to get that signature done.”

While most NBL sides have already completed their rosters for the upcoming campaign, Vickerman explained why the specific player United is looking for has played a part in their elongated recruiting process.

“It’s a unique position that we are requiring this year,” he said.

“We are asking a player to be able to play pretty much from a little bit of point guard all the way up to power forward.

“The body type is somewhere in the 6’6”, 6’7” range, extremely mobile, still has the strength, needs the shooting ability, we want him to be able to create his own shot.

“We are looking for a player that is extremely high level and we are not looking for a rookie.

“We are looking for someone who has good pro experience and has won in places before.”

Melbourne kicks off their championship defence on Friday October 12 in Illawarra against the new-look Hawks.
