Is GWS facing a salary cap squeeze?

2018-08-16T17:55+10:00

Greater Western Sydney could be facing a tight salary cap situation in the coming years, according to SEN Time On host Sam McClure.

While acknowledging numerous teams will be dealt the same hand in the future, McClure says fresh reports from AFL.com.au regarding the future of Giants youngster Will Setterfield could be another indicator of the situation facing Leon Cameron’s men.

SEN’s KB and The Doc with Kevin Bartlett and Dr Turf can be heard Monday-Friday 3-6pm (3-5pm on Friday's), and you can subscribe to the podcast here

“There are reports around today from Mitch Cleary that Will Setterfield, who is a young gun there, been injured all year of course, that he is being eyed off by Victorian clubs, including Carlton and Essendon,” McClure told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“The reality with GWS is that like a lot of clubs, their salary cap is tight and it’s getting tighter next year because of deals that have been previously been done.

“Jeremy Cameron is going to be earning more next year than he is this year, he is going to be earning well over 1.2 million dollars. He is going to be one of the highest paid players in the AFL.

“They’ve got issues with the salary cap but a lot of clubs have issues with the salary cap.

“A lot of questions are going to be asked, clubs like Carlton, Essendon and St Kilda and clubs looking to bolster their midfield, looking at blokes like Setterfield, who have been injured and haven’t been getting a regular game, and Dylan Shiel who is out of contract and is a free agent next year.

“They’re going to be looking at these players and see if they can get them out.”

Former GWS part-time assistant coach Dermott Brereton believes Shiel will be a much-wanted commodity in the coming years.

“I would say Dylan Shiel, of any midfielder given his age, given his capabilities, he would probably be the most sought after midfielder for the last couple years,” Brereton said.
