Has Grundy "gone past" Gawn?

2018-08-19T11:38+10:00

The All-Australian ruck race has been one of the more interesting duals of the 2018 season with Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn separating themselves from the rest.

Over the second half of the season, it seemed as if Gawn was ahead and had the starting ruck spot locked away, but Campbell Brown believes Grundy has now pushed ahead.

“I think Grundy’s gone past Max Gawn as the best ruckman in the competition,” Brown told SEN’s The Sunday Recovery.

“Those two were level-pegging for most of the year, then Maxy just burst away with a really good couple of weeks, but Max Gawn’s last month has been down and Grundy’s has been brilliant.

“He was probably the best player on the ground yesterday.”

Brown also praised Chris Mayne for his turnaround this year.

“Chris Mayne, let’s just applaud him a little bit. This has been his best and most consistent year since probably 2013 when he played a pretty important role in getting Fremantle to the Grand Final,” Brown said.

“He’s just reinvented himself as a winger. It’s outstanding to see.

“Buckley’s done a great job and Collingwood has defied their injury list.”
