Why AFL should “come down hard” on Hodge

2018-08-22T06:55+10:00

Tim Watson believes the AFL needs to hand down a punishment to Brisbane's Luke Hodge, after he publicly criticised the match review system.

Hodge was handed a $2,000 fine for a rough tackle on Gold Coast’s Alex Sexton in the weekend’s Q Clash, with the 34-year-old subsequently slamming the AFL’s MRO system.

According to Watson, the league needs to hit Hodge with another fine for his comments.

“I think they should (fine Hodge) because it’s a bit like the theory about allowing just a little punch and then it becomes a bigger punch,” the former Essendon captain told SEN Breakfast.

“The next player that is not Luke Hodge, who doesn’t have that standing in the game, he says something about the game and then you got complete anarchy with the players.

“I think you got to come down hard and say, we don’t allow that.”

Hodge expressed his anger with the inconsistencies of the MRO this season.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

"The frustrating thing for players, week to week the classification that gets judged is very inconsistent,” he said.

"Sometimes they look at the medical report, sometimes they look at the action.

"I did exactly the same tackle four minutes earlier.

"They said it was because of the force. Three minutes to go and you're up by seven points, you've got to take them to ground.

"It's confusing and frustrating sometimes.

"That's the AFL, they'll do what they want, and we'll have to move on.

"I think they made $26,000 this week, let's hope that goes to charity and not back to the AFL."
